I have an odd habit of counting as I walk up stairs. I’m not counting each stair, I’m not counting time, I’m just counting. Can’t tell you why, I just do, so don’t worry if you hear whispers as I climb stairs. I may be a little weird but I am okay…
When I take the outsider view in–
There’s a part of me that finds comfort in counting. Subconsciously, I’m trying to measure the journey upwards. I want to put a rate on this climb. Unfortunately, I have not the skill to align my count with the seconds that have passed nor with the steps I have scaled.
How good I am really at keeping track of time and of progress? I am just making numbers up!
We live in a progressive culture and I think that matched with today’s speed of convenience leaves us very confused about how much progress we should make and at what pace. So we try to manipulate time and efforts by measuring life on our own account. Numbers that really measure nothing.
This isn’t just my unique problem, how many ladies do you know are walking in circles right now just so their creepy watches can tell Facebook that they reached 10,000 steps today?
At some level, steps matter.

We use stairs as an analogy for growth and progress and success, especially when we say “one step at a time.”
One step at a time should be changed to one foot at a time.
My little light bulb turned on, one step at a time is actually accomplished one foot at a time. Each stepping stone meets one foot before it meets the other.
Walking upwards works best when we move one foot at a time. I think God was right in His design.
Stop counting steps and starting taking them. Otherwise, by the end of the climb, you’ve got a mouth full of numbers and lungs empty of breath. You’re too darn winded to realize you just made it up a whole flight of stairs. That’s one story, by the way. One little story in your sequence of many…taken one ste– one foot at a time in complete independence of your step counter.

I often count as well. Many different things, depending on the situation. If I am sitting and waiting somewhere, I might count ceiling tiles, for example. I get this from my grandmother.

Isn’t it funny how we do that? I feel like it’s a subconscious attempt at controlling the events or space around us haha. Thank you for stopping by! 😊
