Does life feel dull? You are going through the motions, nothing exciting is happening, so you’re just waiting for something really good or really bad to happen.
Your relationships, your job, your hobbies, even your walk with God feel very still. Life’s so still, it’s stale! The plateaus have a way of churning unrest in our souls.
Except we know that plateaus are not the end. We are still walking to…somewhere, time is still passing, but nothing is happening! Wait, GOD, am I walking the right path? There are no major blessings here. There aren’t even any major trials here!
What’s going on, Lord, are you there? Tell me, am I doing alright? Where is my talking donkey?
It’s funny how getting a taste of stale sends you into a frenzy, on the look for some things better to fill your mouth of. So you cram people, places, and things into your calendar hoping to reach some sort of miracle moment. Maybe I’ll find a blessing here, maybe I’ll find it there, maybe I’ll be that blessing. Ooh.
Well, I’ve been there. Ahem, I might be there right now. Pretty unusual, I’d say, how often I ask for stillness only to get it and become an object of restlessness.
Restlessness, you say? No. Rest doesn’t exactly seem to be what I need. I’m not exhausted, I want to keep walking and I need to develop these spiritual muscles, so what would sitting around help me? Well, none.
For a few days, I did reluctantly think “fine, maybe rest is what I need.” But, God nudged a letter in there and said, ‘reset.’
There’s nothing stale about life linked with Jesus. Turns out, I was the one getting stale. Don’t laugh at me, you might be stale, too 🙂
‘Okay. Time to reset. You don’t need to start over, just start where you are. Try refreshing your palette.’
‘What exactly are you looking for?’
I might try to answer that on my own again… But, God. Fitting answer, actually.
What exactly are you looking for, but, Jesus? Resetting is freshening up, clearing your mind of expectations and appreciating the thing for what it is. To cleanse your palette of everything stale, take a drink of the one and only Living Water.
Here, enjoy this song. Let’s just say it’s our little talking donkey of the day.
